What is the different between Instead of and Rathar than?

OR
Please send me the Document Instead of Mr. Jhon.
and
The meeting will be held on 30th jun instead of 25 jun...
OR
The meeting will be held on 30th jun rather than 25 Jun.

Please explain ..

Please send the document to me rather than to Mr John. (Sending it to me is the preferred thing to do)
Please send the document to me instead of Mr John (originally it would have been sent to Mr John. Now the arrangement is that you should send it to me.)

The meeting will be held on 30th June rather than the 25th June. (The 30th June is the preferred date or only available alternative date)
The meeting will be held on 30th June instead of 25th June. (originally it was scheduled for 25th June. Now arrangements have changed.)
