Company cannot afford to give anyone a raise this year.
Explain the meaning of the word "raise" here and also its other meanings ?

Hi,

In British English 'raise' would be the transitive verb meaning 'lift up' 'make higher' as in: Raise your arm above your head.

If you want to talk about an increase in pay/salary/wage, you would use the word 'rise' as in: After two years you get a rise in your pay - it increases. 'Rise' is also a verb meaning 'increase' as in: When the sun shines brightly, the temperature rises.

I would also use 'rise' but the American use of 'raise' is catching on in the UK too.
