Can you say "the reason why something happens is because..."? Or should it be "the reason why something happens is that..."? Or can you say "the reason something happens is because..."?

I hate that my Word doesn't have grammar check.

'The reason (why something happens) is because..." would be redundant: 'because' means 'for the reason that' or 'due to'. So, it would be like saying: 'the reason is for the reason that...'. Your second option is better: 'the reason (why something happens) is that...' or simply 'the reason (...) is...'.

Believe me. The grammar checker in Word cannot check grammar. I could give you all sorts of examples of wildly bad grammar that it will miss.

Can you say "the reason is because" though? I really need to know if this is grammartically correct. And thanks.

Although many people use the phrase 'the reason is because', it is grammatically incorrect.

Hi,

People who don't want to explain something straightaway and like to make their answer as long as possible before committing themselves - you know the people I mean - politicians often say: The reason is because ****** People who can't stop talking and go on and on. You know the type? I do.

I have read the phrase "the reason is because of ...." in quite a few texts so maybe it's just clumsy rather than grammatically incorrect?

It's clumsy, illogical AND grammatically incorrect.
