I know it’s Sunday, but doubts keep on creeping in all the same and this is one of them:

How long will they stay (for)?

Does the use of the preposition ‘for’ in this sentence add to its meaning in some way or is it merely decorative?

Thanks in advance.

It doesn't add any meaning.
