hello
i have scheduled on 27th june please review my essay.

"Conformity almost always leads to a deadening of individual creativity and energy."

Confirming to age old norms and wisdom without questioning them kills creative ideas. It essentially stifles progress of an individual and human society.
Questioning every idea is the basic principle of science . If Galileo had to confirmed to prevailing ideas of earth being center of universe he would have never pursued studies to find the reasons that suggest the contrary.

Questioning existing established norms makes us less servile to oppression. It is this quality that makes a strong leader be it Mahatma Gandhi or Martin Luther King who refused to confirm with existing social order.

Challenging the existing accepted ideas requires great courage and is often met with resistance from the people in authority who have reached to the top on back of this ideas. But if there is merit in a new idea and we persevere with it, it eventually finds social acceptance.

Encouraging new ideas leads to innovation after all progress is defined as bettering from previous standard. We regard a great society as one that promotes rational thinking and its is basic human nature to question.
Thus we can say that conformity leads to a deadening of individual creativity. (194)

And Argument

A folk remedy* for insomnia, the scent in lavender flowers, has now been proved effective. In a recent study, 30 volunteers with chronic insomnia slept each night for three weeks on lavender-scented pillows in a controlled room where their sleep was monitored. During the first week, volunteers continued to take their usual sleeping medication. They slept soundly but wakened feeling tired. During the second week, the volunteers discontinued their medication. As a result, they slept less soundly than the previous week and felt even more tired. During the third week, the volunteers slept longer and more soundly than in the previous two weeks. This shows that over a short period of time lavender cures insomnia.
*A folk remedy is usually a plant-based form of treatment common to traditional forms of medicine, ones that developed before the advent of modern medical services and technology

The passage discusses usefulness of lavender as a effective folk remedy for insomia. It demonstrates with a help of study which suggest that smell of lavender is better than conventional drugs given to insomniac patients.

But there are few things that need to be considered . First because lifestyle has significant effect on sleep patterns any changes in it have to be taken into account. It is not clear whether the understudy maintained same lifestyle over the period of studies.

It is also important to take into account effects of existing drug which can continue for a period of time even after discontinuing. Also other factors that alters sleep like noise ,light, disturbances, stress et al are not taken into account when research is carried out in controlled environment. The effectiveness of folk medicine under such circumstances is untested.

Long term effects of using lavender scented products to induce sleep should be deliberated using more elaborate test cases.
Although the study is encouraging it would be improper to jump to the conclusion that only using lavender cures insomnia. The merits on conventional drugs should be carefully considered.(185)

Hello Gretesttaker,

Your argument section is better written than your essay. Although you have good insights, the essay seems like only a tabulation of bullet points that you have made; it therefore lacks the effluence and organisation that is required for a well written, persuasive piece. Here are four main points I would improve:
1. you are neglecting the definite article before some of your nouns (especially abstract nouns)
2. you haven't developed your points in an essay format, you have only tabulated them
3. You have used the term "confirm" very often, but I think that you mean, in every case, "conform."
4. I am not sure if the term 'deadening' it how it was phrased in the exam, or if it is your term, either way, it is not 'academic' English ans should be replaced; same for "bettering."

Good luck on the exam!!
