Hello, Mitra:

(1) First, I believe that most Americans usually prefer the word "store."

(2) I think that Americans buy their appliances at different kinds of stores:

(a) Department stores (such as the famous company called Sears, Roebuck and Company).

(b) Home Improvement stores (such as Home Depot).

(c) Warehouse clubs (such as Costco, where you pay a membership fee and then can buy their products).

(3) I think that the most important thing to remember is that here in the States, those stores sell many OTHER things besides appliances.

(4) Nowadays, there are so-many kinds of appliances that it would be impossible for one so-called "appliance store" to sell everything.

(5) Furthermore, what do you mean by the word "appliance"? Do you mean a vacuum cleaner? Well, then I think many people would go to

one of those stores I mentioned above. Do you mean a computer? Well, I guess that many people would go to an "electronics store," where

they specialize in selling things such as computers.

(6) I do not know much about this matter because I do not shop much. Let's see what some good shoppers tell us.

Sincerely,

James

Okay, James. The only problem is that Americans don't think of their computer as an appliance. You will never hear an American (other than maybe a computer engineer) refer to a computer using that word.

For us, appliances are things like washing machines, stoves, refrigerators, etc.

You go to an appliance store for an appliance, and you go to an electronics store or computer store for a computer. And, of course, you can go to a so-called "big box" store that has everything, but you mentioned that.

Thank you, Jamie, for teaching me that I should not use the word "appliance" to refer to a computer.

Dear Jamie K,
Thank you very much indeed for your reply.
Here, the weather is so hot; would you like something to drink like this?
Regards

Thank you for the goodies, Mitra.

I should also mention that in the US any store is liable to sell anything. So the appliance store may sell computers, and the computer store may sell appliances. The gasoline station may sell a few pharmaceuticals, and the pharmacy may sell motor oil. And almost every store sells greeting cards.

In my neighborhood, if I want a notebook, I go to the pharmacy. If I want light bulbs, I get them at the grocery store. My favorite chocolate is sold at the bookstore.
