to my taste/ for my taste which one is the correct one? #1 (permalink) Tue Jul 05, 2011 14:49 pm   to my taste/ for my taste which one is the correct one?

Hi everyone,

Can I say: 'The sauce was too vinegary/ spicy to my taste.' or should it be 'The sauce was too vinegary/ spicy for my taste.'?

Which one is the correct one or are they both interchangeable?

Thanks
Alexandro.

"too vinegary/spicy for my taste"
"not to my taste"
"exactly to my taste"

Thanks Dozy, so can you say: 'The sauce was exactly to my taste.'? Moreover why does one use : too vinegary/ spicy for my taste?
and can you also say: 'The film was entirely to my taste.' or 'The fillm was too violent for my taste.'? May I ask if you know the answer to my questions about the subjunctive mood, also called the conjuctive mood in English, like in German: 'Der Konjunktiv 1& 2' and 'Le subjonctif présent et le subjonctif passé in French? In Dutch it is called 'de aanvullende wijs.' Please Dozy, tell me more, I would really appreciate it. I assume you speak and write those languages as fluently as you speak English. If not then I'm very sorry. But you can still help me out with the subjunctive in English.

Thanks
Alexandro.

Yes.

The pattern in this instance is "too X for Y". Compare "too hot for comfort", "too big for this room", etc. etc.

Subjunctive is not my strongest subject, but if no one more competent than me answers I'll try to take a look...

(I've no idea why you would assume I am fluent in German, French and Dutch! I'm not!)

Dear Dozy,

I didn't wish to make you angry. You've helped me such a great deal already. If I have made the wrong assumption, which obviously I have, please accept my apologies.

Alexandro.

No worries, I wasn't at all angry, just surprised. The chance of an average native English speaker also speaking those three languages fluently is extremely small.
