Claim: The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its role models.
Reason: Heroes and role models reveal a society's highest ideals.

Character of any person includes his behavior, moral and ethical values, and aggregate features and traits that form an individual’s personality. The character of the society includes the economical and political environment, ethical values, conventional traditions, beliefs, connection between people, history, custom etc. Now Society is an agglomeration of people with different religion, region, tradition and lifestyle. Clearly to understand the character of any society, one must examine the character of people of the society. And therefore I accede with the claimed statement that says the best way to understand the character of society is to understand the same of men and women. Nevertheless, I am less likely to agree with the reason that speaker has given here. Here I present some argument to support my views.

Heroes and role models are defined and chosen by the people, who have contributed expert services to the respective field. They have been called role models because they inspire and motivate general public to act like them or behave like them. For example, Sachin Tendulkar is considered the GOD of the cricket field. Master Blaster has always been a role model for the novice players in the field. Similarly, The Great Big B, Amitabh Bachhan, greatest actor in the bollywood history in India has always inspired the public with his marvelous performance on the screen and generous public activities off the screen. But my point is everybody can not be The Bachhan or The Master Blaster. The role model or heroes only encourage people; they do not play any role to construct their character.

Secondly, all the role models and Heroes are not good human being in the reality. Most of personal lives of the celebrities, let be them from an entertainment field or political field or any other, are disaster and slander. Take an example of Britani spears, one of the most popular music star of the world, have long history of her failed marriage life and her sexual affairs. Her absurd behavior to hew kids made her lose the custody of the kids. Even though people loved her in the earlier stage of her career, she cannot be considered as a role model or a heroine who can represent her society. Another Example is of Tiger Woods. The world’s best golf player and the costliest athlete and was very popular amongst the golf lovers. Eventually, world came to know about the dark side of his real life. His sexual affairs, mental instability, immoral behavior to the family showed the real character of the Wood. Such immoral role models and heroes can never be the scale to define the character of the society.

Recapitulating, No person is perfect, similarly those who are said to be role model of the society might lack some substantial social characteristic in their personality. People chose them because of their uniqueness in the respective field. To define the characteristics of the society, the overall analyzing of humanity is necessary. Profound considerations are essential to scale serious issues that cover the whole society.
