Hello Torsten
Since 1991 I have been living in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Before I have lived in Kaunas, which is my native city. My tongue language is Lithuanian, also I speak Russian (very well) and a little bit Polish.
Torsten you pronounced my name correctly  |
Hello Dainius,
It's great to hear your voice. Thanks a lot for recording your first voice message here on the forum. In the background I could hear a Lithuanian TV or radio channel. At least I think it was Lithuanian.
What did I do in Kaunas? Well, I went there by car and trailer to get some building materials to a friend of mine. He was building a house and needed some materials he could buy only in Germany.
So how are things with you in Vilnius? What do you do? Do you live in the palace we can see in your picture?
Talk to you soon, Torsten PS: Can you please say 'Thank you very much' in Lithuanian? |
Hello Torsten I am sorry, that I didn’t answer faster, because I was fully busy (it was my wife jubilee on weekend). So now I have free time and can continue our discussion. First of all I thank you Torsten for possibility to discuss in this Forum. I find it is for me very useful and I am glad to be a part of this site. You and your colleagues do a very great job. I take part to such forum first.
So, what do I do? I am police officer. I have been working in Training division of Personnel board of Police department under the Ministry of Interior. Before I worked in public division, later worked in criminal police. So now I am more administrator, than policeman.
English for me is not necessary directly in my Job, but anyway I want to learn it, because it was my old ambition. For my English improve I use various methods (I have own methodology) like self study, like reading books, listening radio, watching TV, movies and so one. I now it is very difficult point for me, but I now, that day by day, step by step I will reach my goal.
So in former picture I was in Warsaw last year. It was royal palace (museum), but if this photo made such question I replayed with other picture. P.S. 'Thank you very much' in Lithuanian is labai ačiū

Hello Dainius,
How are things with you in Vilnius? Labai ačiū for sharing your experiences with us. It's great to be able to communicate with you although you live on the Eastern edge of Europe.
So what language do you speak most of the time? Probably Lithuanian? When I was in Kaunas in the early 90ies I was quite surprised to hear the people on the streets speak Lithuanian. Back then I thought that all citizens of the Soviet Union would speak Russian most of the time.
Also, if you like you can tell us more about your work at as a police officer. What do you like most about your job?
Speak to you soon, Torsten

Hello Torsten
So how are my things in Vilnius? Fine, thanks. In relation to edge of Europe I think that it depends on viewpoint in person. So I speak most of the time Lithuanian. People speak in Vilnius in various languages: Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, Jewish (nowadays not so much), Byelorussian, because this city is multicultural from medieval. Nowadays people which leave in Vilnius speak Lithuanian about eighty percent. In Kaunas the main speech was always Lithuanian, for this reason you Torsten was wonder-strucked by Kaunas speech. Noteworthy that nowadays people especially young people in Lithuania speak English, German, France. So I would not speak a lot about my job, because I guess it isn’t interesting to the others members of this forum. Regards, Dainius |

Hi Dainius,
Thank you so much for sharing all this information with me because there are a lot people here on the forum who are interested in what you have to say. First off, I noticed that in my previous recording I didn't pronounce your name correctly. It's Dainius as in 'day' not as in 'dice'. You are right -- Lithuiania actually is not at the edge of Europe but rather in the northern part of Europe, close to Scandinavia. Since Lithuania joined the EU I have been seeing quite a number of cars with Lithuanian number plates here in Germany, especially in Leipzig. That's good because it shows that the European concept works. We can travel freely within the EU and learn more about each other. By the way, I read that Lithuania initially had planned to join the Euro zone but this has been postponed now. What do you think about introducing the Euro as your new currency?
Labai ačiū, Torsten
