Could you explain why we use "sat" in this sentence,please?

'Sat' is the only option that makes sense.
To use 'came', which is a verb indicating movement from place to place, you would have to change the sentence and you would still need a verb like 'sit' to indicate what you are doing:
Afterwards, I wanted to relax so we came down to the beach to sit/lie/be in the sun.
