Hi all!

I'm Amy and I'm a yankee (thus the forum name) and I'm also a newbie here. And this yank has been teaching English in Germany for quite some time now (primarily Business English).

Haven't had a chance to thoroughly look at everything here yet, but so far it looks quite interesting. Very Happy

See ya later!

Hello Amy, pleased to meet you. It's interesting that you call yourself a yankee. I mean, how do you define 'yankee'? Is it enough to be raised in the north of the US or is there more to it? Are there also coloured Yankees are they always white?
Looking forward to learning from you,
Andreana

Hi Andreana

Nice to meet you, too!

Your question is a good one. In the United States the term "Yankee" dates back to colonial times and was originally applied to the (white) colonists in the northeast. And that's where I come from.

Would African-Americans call themselves "Yankees"? I doubt it, unless the person happens to be be a member of the New York Yankees baseball team. Wink

During our Civil War, there were the "Yankees" and the "Rebels". In this case "Yankee" again refers to people from the northeastern U.S.

Even today, if you called somebody "a Yankee" and that person grew up in the southeastern US (Alabama, for example), that person would inform you that he/she is definitely not a Yankee! Wink

Does that clarify things a bit?

Amy

Hi Amy!

What about you? If anybody called you a "Rebel" would you deny that immediately?

Hi Michael

Well, I might not deny being a bit of a "rebel", but I would deny being a "Reb", even though there are a couple of southerners on the family tree. I'd also deny that I'm a "southern belle". Very Happy

Well, can you say 'northern belle/beau' then or is there another term for it ? Smile

Hi Conchita

The expression "southern belle" is an old*, fixed expression and refers to an upper class woman from the American South (e.g. possibly a plantation owner's wife/daughter). This woman would also be known for her impeccable manners and etiquette.

(* "old" by American standards Wink - i.e., dates back to colonial times, I think)

The expression "southern beau" does not exist (at least not as a fixed expression).

And, no, there also aren't any "northern belles".

Amy

EDIT:
I guess I'm having trouble thinking of an equivalent expression for someone from the north because I associate the expression "southern belle" very closely with "plantation". And there weren't / aren't any plantations in the north.

Howdy! I'm Amy and I'm a yankee Thu Jul 27, 2006 7:56 am  Howdy! I'm Amy and I'm a yankee

Hi Amy,

I just have learnt that Yankee and Amy is the same person.
Before, I thought that Yankee and Amy are two different persons.

Hi, I'm very nice to know you. You know, your explanations have left deep impressions in my heart, in evry detail.

You know, until yesterday, I "had hated" very much Yankee because of its way to say. Conversely, I like very much Amy because of her explaining ways and of her pleasant style.

You know, I used to think that Amy is only a student being btw 18 and 25, very nice and dynamique.

But Yankee is different, not as I thought in Amy.

Unbelievable, 2 persons with 2 styles different.

So, you are both only one and I AM VERY SORRY for asking you many things,as I thought you was only a student.

Again, many thanks for your answers in every detail.
If you are free, and if it doesn't disturb you, please review all of my questions (that you haven't yet answered) and share with me your opinions.

I like the way of thinking, of expressing... of Amy more than of Yankee, although it's only one person.

For my information, I taught French before. Right now, I work in business. However, I like languages more than business.

Once again, sorry.

Good luck
Van Khanh

N.B: Do you know Frech? If you know Frech, it's easy to express.
