need help with math section! #1 (permalink) Mon Jul 18, 2011 21:09 pm   need help with math section!

Hey readers! I'm having difficulty with the math section of the GRE. Can anyone help me with this problem??

1. Of 200 students taking the GRE, all of them have college degrees, 120 have been out of college for at least 3 years, 70 have business degrees, and 60 have been out of college for less than 3 years and do not have business degrees. How many of them have been out of college for at least 3 years and have business degrees.

(A) 40
(B) 50
(C) 60
(D) 70
(E) 80

any input would be greatly appreciated!!

200 students

120 out of college more than 3 years, how many do have business degrees?

70 business degree

60 less than 3 years, no business degree

200-120-70-60= -50

Answer B 50

Agreed?

Regards,

Ozzy

Ozzy - I agree with your answer, but your explanation seems to be lacking.

jamiegirl - Here is something more indepth: Because there are two mutually exclusive categories, it's best to use a table to organize your information. A Venn diagram might be tempting, but it's not the best tool for this job.

Note that you don't have to fill out the entire table to get the correct answer, which is B.

Thank you for putting the diagram with a clear explanation BenchPrepGURU,

Googling it I just found another entry of yours on "urch.com" (regarding the same question)

Regards,

Ozzy
