Whether the government should pay for some non-practical researches is a thought provoking topic. Many people argue that paying fund to these useless researches is a waste of money. However, some others hold a different idea, stating the importance of these researches. And there are still some people who are in dilemma. Yet I personally subscribe to the argument that the government should support all kinds of scientific researches.
One of the most important reasons is that some non-practical researches are important for other practical ones. For example, it is universally acknowledged that the extinction of dinosaurs is caused by a meteorite, however, the research seems useless for our human beings, because we are not dinosaurs, we actually do not need to know how they dIED. But the awareness of the destructive power of the meteorite is so decisive that it can even affect the future of humanS and it force us to do other researches about the striking damage of the meteorite and learn how to avoid the disaster happening again. So the non-practical researches of the extinction of some organisms help us to do other practical researches to protect our human.
What’s more, the value of some researches are not obvious at first, if the government do not pay attention to them, maybe some great inventions would never be created. Two hundred years ago, nobody will believe that we can fly in the air, and the research about how to make people fly was regarded ridiculous and meaningless. Nowadays, we can use several hours to across the Pacific Ocean by the plane. What will happen if no one provide fund to these “non-practical” researches? Our life would not be so convenient.
Admittedly, the FUND capacity of our government is limited and it is hard for the government to support all researches. But since the possibility of some exciting results exists, we can never say that the government should not support the non-practical research. Alternatively, the government can selectively choose some non-practical researches which seem more valuable and necessary to fund.
I am convinced that we would actually benefit from these researches. Though there are still a lot of uncertainties, they are still worthwhile and may bring us some unpredictable results. Therefore, the government should support these non-practical researches.
