Hi Everyone,

Please tell me. Is there any different between announce and declare??
Can I say " Mr. Lai declared that the meeting is be canceled / Mr. Lai announce that the meeting is be canceled."

Thanks

Generally speaking, "declare" seems more forceful, and "announce" more informational. However, as is usual with pairs of similar words, there are various patterns where only one can be used. For example, you can "announce (i.e. introduce) the next contestant" but not (in the same sense) "declare the next contestant"; you can "declare war" but not (in the same sense) "announce war".

In your sentence "announce" would be more usual, though "declare" is also possible. There are a couple of mistakes:

"Mr. Lai declared that the meeting is to be canceled / Mr. Lai announced that the meeting is to be canceled."

Depending on the recency/currency of this information, it may be better to say "was" rather than "is".
