Are these sentences natural? August 3 #1 (permalink) Wed Aug 03, 2011 13:45 pm   Are these sentences natural? August 3

Hi,

Are the following sentences natural to a native ear?

1. This is all how cold it gets here in the winter.

2. Mine takes about good two minutes to open the site.

3. Do you find your computer is too slow to open some internet sites?

Thanks,
MG.

#1 is not quite right. "This is how cold it gets here in the winter" would be OK. I'm not certain what you are trying to do with the addition of "all".

#2 is not right either. You can say either "Mine takes about two minutes to open the site" or "Mine takes a good two minutes to open the site" (roughly means "at least two minutes", emphasising the length of time).

#3 is OK. (Personally, I would probably say "...slow to load some web pages" because the concept of "opening an internet site" seems technically faintly iffy. Others might disagree.)

Thanks Dozy.

You know, how sometimes we use 'that's all it is'. I though I could extend it to this situation.

Also, how about this version of #3? Which one is better?

3b. Do you find your computer to be too slow to load some internet sites?

I would use 'is' rather than 'to be'. I prefer Dozy's suggestion of 'web pages'. Your browser doesn't load an entire site at once.

Right, I don't see how to work "all" in that sense into the sentence. If I've understood your intended meaning correctly, you could say "This is as cold as it gets here in the winter."
