another is one more..
Can you give me another pen?
I want to see another book...

The others means the rest of.... or the remaining...
I have 5 friends.Two of them are male.The others are female.(you must know the exact number)

others is rest of..but you dont know the exact number..
Some people like cats..others dont...

other is always adjective..so you cant use it alone..
other book,other books..
