The groom was but her poor friend wasn't #3 (permalink) Fri Oct 15, 2004 19:33 pm   The groom was but her poor friend wasn't

Hi Brainy,

Could you please give us some more context? What exactly do you want to say?

How about this:

Marry invited her best friend Tanya to her wedding. Most people at the party were happy - at least the groom was but her poor friend Tanya wasn't because...

hi torsten
you wrote 'was but her poor friend''..i don't know..maybe that was the sentence i was looking for..
my original sentence was..'was not but her poor friend'..so i guess we shouldn't include negation?

Hi Brainy,

Some more context would be helpful here.

When I read the sentence, I first thought you might have meant to say, "The groom was nothing but her poor friend," as if to emphasize that he is not the love of her life or some other status better than mere friend!

I agree with Torsten: More context would be helpful.
