It is more important to understand ideas and concepts than to learn facts.
Some people tend to pay their attention to practical things, because the facts can be transformed into goods and people will benefit by selling the goods. But as society becoming more and more sophisticated, a large number of advanced products have been invented. Others think that for the sake of getting better development opportunities, people should master ideas and concepts to support the facts. I believe that knowing the ideas behind the facts is more important.
In order to possess a deep understanding of certain events and get a good grade at school, students must make sure that we need to understand theory and concepts before we focus on details. For example, I did a lot of mathematic exercises when I was in grade one in high school but I still got a unexpected grade. I went to my mathematics teacher for help. She asked me to try to understand all concepts before working out math problems. After I followed her advice I really got good grades and I realized that students should not just memorize a list of facts, they should understand what they are studying.
If people have not comprehend ideas and concepts, they may not have the chance to invent new things and our society may miss some significant discoveries. Take the founder of the theory of relativity Einstein for example. After Newton established the concept of space and time, no one dare to challenge this theory. They just learn the facts and thus no critical concepts were published during those days. But in spite of learning the existed facts, Einstein established a new system of theory about the relationship between time and space, “the theory of relativity”. And this theory has influenced our life dramatically. According to his theory scientists have found the way to develop an atomic bomb and they also have manufactured spacecrafts to explore the universe. So just learn about facts prevent people from getting further development.
In sum, not only the capability to learn ideas and concepts is crucial to do better at school but it is also a driving force for our society to develop. So, knowing the facts is nice, but it is not as important as understanding the ideas behind them.
