I think this is the scenario you mean. Please let me know if I'm wrong: (1) Person 1: I have to go to the airport. Person 2 a little later: Didn't you say you had to go to the airport? versus (2) Person 1: I had to go to the airport. Person 2 a little later: Didn't you say you had to go to the airport?
In (1) the person indicates that they have to go at some time in the future (any time from the immediate future onward). However, they don't go within the time frame that person2 expects them to go, so person 2 asks his question.
In (2) the person indicates that they needed to go to the airport some time in the past. He then says or does something which seems to contradict the fact that he went to the airport, leaving person 2 wondering if he went or not. Then person 2 asks the question. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |

| Thank You very much Our Beeesneees, but if we don't know what person 1 said, is it imposible to say which sentence of person 1 concerns: Didn't you say you had to go to the airport? |

That's right. We wouldn't know which tense person 1 used from what person 2 said. _________________ Cheers m' dears! |
