Hmmm... I guess you were talking about plants in your 'pruning' question then.

This shows the action of pinching a shoot. The purpose is usually to pull it away from the main plant without cutting using a knife/scissors, etc.
Note the person is holding the new part of the plant between their thumb and their first finger. He is about to press his thumbnail into the stalk to break it.
