It is important know about events happening around the world but not related to you.
Some people today just deal with their own businesses; they believe it is unnecessary to care about the lives of strangers. To the contrary, I regard this kind of people as nearsighted, because we do benefit from paying attention to what events are happening around the world.
As people live in an age of globalization, many important events happened around the world influence our lives indirectly, especially the world's economy. For example, in 2008, the U.S. suffered a big depression but many Chinese people didn't realize that their financial situation would be effected. They continued to borrow a large number of money from banks to invest real estates. Eventually, the depression has hit Chinese economy and the price of houses dropped dramatically so that such investors were bankrupt. If they have noticed the depression in the U.S., such tragedies would never happen.
It is also a kind of entertainment by knowing the events happening in the world. Take my father for example, he always watches TV news after having supper and he finds it interesting to know big events (like Iraq War, six-party talks and something like that). I know he doesn’t except to see himself on the news but as my father once said to me "I just feel like I am a member of this great world by getting in touch of important issues around the world." In that case, it does have some significance to know the worldwide events even they are not about us.
By knowing about what have happened in the world, people may have more topics to talk about. In modern society, people live in a faster pace and they are always busy working so that they may miss concern about other's lives. It is embarrassing to meet several new friends but you have nothing to talk about. One of my roommates, John Hu, who is fascinated with the world's events, has a lot of friends. Every time he comes across his friends, he can easily approach a specific topic which both he and his friends are interested. So knowing much worldwide events which are commonly known is a good way to make friends.
In sum, globalization, the purpose of entertainment and the will to become sociable are all convincing reasons to concern about global events. And we are truly living in a global community, so we cannot afford to be isolated from one another.
