Which is correct:
1-I mentioned that while we were eating lunch.
2-I mentioned that while we ate lunch.

3-Mention that while you are eating lunch with him.
4-Mention that while you eat lunch with him.

While: I mentioned that while we were eating lunch Mon Apr 24, 2006 13:52 pm  While: I mentioned that while we were eating lunch

At first, I reckoned both to be correct just refer to two different states of being.

Then I realized that "while" refers to continues state of being, thus the correct versions would be "were eating" and "are eating".

For examples 2 and 4 you should use When instead of While.

Am I in the ballpark here?
