Does yet work as already?

I thought that yet was only used when you put a negative before like:

"Have you not finished your work yet?"

But then I began to hear stuff like "Did you have the baby yet?"

So it sounds to me like there should be an already there... And I've noticed in many other sentences but I was just thinking "Maybe I don't hear the Not part"... So I dont know lol

'Yet' usually appears in negative statements and in questions, while 'already' usually appears in affirmative statements. However, they often cross each other's lines.
