Dear English Experts,

They say NEXT WEEK and THE NEXT WEEK are quite different in meaning. Could you enlighten me. Thank you.
Love you.

Dear English Experts,

Could you enlighten me about this very usage of SHOULD.

A. I'm going to the mall to buy a new MP4!
B. I should stay at home and save some money!
Thanks. Love you.

Here's what I think:
(in the first person) expressing a conjecture or hope.
(If I were to come with you, the consequence would be that I would spend money, but if I choose to stay at home the consequence will be that I save money).

Dear Beeesnees,

Wonderful explanation! But, I understand as,

It's advisable that you should stay at home. ( or )

If I were you, I would stay at home.

Love you.

Ah yes, it makes sense to read it like that too, if you place the emphasis elsewhere in the sentence. Once again, it depends on context.

Reading it that way, the function of 'should' is to give advice.

Hi,

The sentence on its own without further reference using 'should' in the first person suggests that is the right thing to do. Compare this with 'I ought to' where what is necessary is also a duty and an obligation.

Look at these:

I should save some money so that I can pay my taxes.

I ought to pay my taxes because the law says I must.
