opinions on recent speech patterns please? #1 (permalink) Sat Sep 03, 2011 12:21 pm   opinions on recent speech patterns please?

There are a few things I've noticed over the last few years that I find really irritating and that in my mind lessen the language quality. I'd love to hear other opinions.

1 "I'm like late." So you're not late, but it's just like it or what?
I can't stand the meaningless use or misapplication of words like that, worse when it's really frequent.

2 "That's so not my thing." That's just plain wrong and it's so common now.
Doesn't this kind of stuff give language professors high blood pressure?

3 This is more of a UK thing, and probably not everywhere. But you get "It's pure busy
today."
Or worse, with a verb "It's pure raining." What's wrong with "very" or whatever
suits any given occasion?

So what do others think? And have I missed any beauties? I probably have.

I've never heard the third, thank goodness.
I dislike the other two.

You've missed loads.
'My bad', 'for free', 'vee' instead of 'versus', 'could/would/should of' spring immediately to mind.

The third one is largely, but not exclusively a Glasgow thing. Dire!

How could I have forgotten the "could/would/should of" nonsense! One of my pet hates. I always want to ask them to spell and define it. But one would probably be wasting one's breath.

I've sometimes heard "my bad", "for free", never heard "vee". The sound of it doesn't bother me too much, though of course it's wrong and lazy.
And I hate it when they pronounce "asap" as a word rather than individual letters.

to hear 'vee' just listen to any television sports report or preview:

"Join us for Manchester United v.(sounded vee') Tottenham Hotspur, next Wednesday..."
They sound the abbreviation instead of the full word just because it has become a standard written format. I'm willing to bet that many of our younger generation don't even recognise that the 'v.' in such a billing represents the word 'versus'.

Fair enough, it's not the kind of thing I follow. I think language really deteriorates that way. I like to read older books, like those by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to maintain a certain standard without being really outdated.
