There is nothing that an uneducated person can teach an educated person #1 (permalink) Tue Sep 06, 2011 23:33 pm   There is nothing that an uneducated person can teach an educated person

Hello, I'm new here :). Thank you for reading my essay, any input is greatly appreciated.

There is nothing that an uneducated person can teach an educated person

I believe that there are many things an educated person can learn from someone with no formal training in a specific field. Education is not just about attending a school or about having a degree, it is about being willing to learn and grow. There are many people with an excellent resume, but who have no real drive or passion. Perhaps those people could benefit from having someone to inspire them, someone who might not have had the opportunity to have a traditional education but who fight every day to have a better life.

Also, a degree or a diploma is no proof of the skills someone possess. Many professionals are empirical - they have learnt everything they know about a job by constant practice. The 'school of life', as we call it in my country. Journalism is a good example. Many decades ago, journalists were mostly empirical. There were not many Journalism schools or faculties, and young reporters had to start from the bottom, perhaps typing or serving coffee to editors until they finally had to chance to start writing on their own. They learnt everything there is to know about the profession by reporting every single day, not by studying theories and practicing in controlled, sterile environments like Journalism school of today. Nowadays, elder reporters, those who were not formally trained, have a sense of adventure and professionalism that wide-eyed newly graduates won't have until much later.

Another point that I consider to be important is that wisdom is not acquired in a classroom. It comes with life and with age. I am sure that many look up to their grandparents and value their input and opinions very much, even though perhaps they didn't have the opportunity to continue their education. My grandmother, the wisest person I have ever met, only got until third grade. There are many things that an uneducated person can teach an educated person, because there are many things to be learnt outside the classroom.
