I got some problems when I made comments on someone's essay. Help me ...... #1 (permalink) Tue Sep 13, 2011 14:47 pm   I got some problems when I made comments on someone's essay. Help me ......

"What is more, we are not God and thus we may encounter some problems, even THOUGH failures in working or studying".

In this essay, I thought the writer should use "even though" not only "even". Actually, I have the same problem about how to use "even" and "even though". Could anyone help me understand that?

Thank you so much!

"even though" does not work in this sentence.

"... some problems, even failures in working or studying" means that those failures are examples of the aforementioned problems, and, furthermore, are towards the more unexpected or extreme end of the spectrum of possible problems. Singling out "failures in working or studying" in this way feels faintly odd and anticlimactic to me, though the sentence is not incorrect. I am half wondering if the writer actually meant "... some problems, even failures, in working or studying", which changes the meaning fairly significantly.

If the sentence ended "... even though X", then X would have to explain something that might be expected to prevent or mitigate the problems but in fact doesn't. For example: "we may encounter some problems, even though we try hard to avoid them".

Thank you Dozy.

I also didn't understand what the writer actually meant. Your examples had made me undertood the use of "even" and "even though".

Thanks.
