What is your favourite pop or rock band? #62 (permalink) Wed Oct 08, 2008 5:07 am   What is your favourite pop or rock band?

I can't remember if I've already posted in here -- I'll proceed as if I haven't.

I am a fan of songs moreso than bands, and as such is the case I have a hard time picking a favorite band. Heck, I'm finding it difficult to name ten, since so many have recorded what I consider to be memorable songs.

But... my favorite pop act of my lifetime is:

Madonna

She's not a great singer, but she is an exceptional entertainer whose career boasts a carload if hits and/or otherwise memorable songs, and as the years have passed her overall catalog has become pretty diverse. Some of her chief competitors were Billy Joel, Elton John, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. (I know, how obvious and commercial could I get?)

And of the rock bands that have been recording in my lifetime, my favorite is:

Bon Jovi

They played fast songs, they played slow songs, ballads and hard rock alike -- I like the depth of their total body of work and the fact that so many of their songs are memorable. Their main competitors were Metallica, Bruce Springsteen, U2, Van Halen (with DLR) and REO Speedwagon.

So I chose two highly mainstream, highly commercial acts. When you can put 20+ hits on a greatest hits CD and I grew up listening to all of them, that counts for something in my book.
Both had lots of competition spanning the sub-genres of pop and rock. I figure if I could spend five or six hours watching one pop act and one rock band perform, I'd go with those two.

Hi Tom,

I listen to songs but I am not that good at identifying what type they are (their genre).

Can you please help me identify the genre of the following songs?

1) Sexy back -- Justin Timberlake
2) What goes around... comes around -- Justin Timberlake (There's a bit played at the beginning of the song, it's really cool)
3) Cry me a river -- Justin Timberlake
4) Under my umbrella -- Rihanna

Also, can you please tell me names of a few songs that fall under grooves genre?

I strongly resent the suggestion I stole this Album off Torsten
Truth is he just left it in my car 15 years ago and
just hasn't got around to getting it back yet. :-)

Do I have to teach you guys about music too? LOL.
Here is HARRY CHAPIN,. There never was, and never will ever be again, a singer/songwriter of his calibre anywhere.

This song is about a farmer who purchases a wife through a newspaper. This was often done in those days. The guy is so lonely and alone on the farm, that he tells her that just to hear her cry, is magic to his ears. How lonely can someone get?
Please listen, and marvel to, HARRY CHAPIN.

No Harm to Mr Chapin (Who I seen in Belfast)
but he can be a bit depressing sometimes Bill -
btw if she was mail order why did he go to the station?
why not just sign for her on his doorstep? :-)

Have a nice strong coffee for a change Bill
Chill out and put your feet up for a few minutes
Eyes closed and just let yourself float off on with this -

XTC was my favorite Band when I was a mere pup. :-)
They were very much part of the "New Wave"
But they didn't really last because bizarrely enough
their lead singer had a fear of crowds and couldn't tour!!
100% true. Look out for Richard Branson in the first video
dressed as a General - XTC - (play on ecstasy)

As for me I enjoy songs of different groups and singers. I can't say that I like all the songs of this or that singer or group. So I listen to different kinds of music. The least that I have added to my own "playlist" is the song By Tori Amos Sorta Fairy Tale. The clip is worth seeing. Can anybody help me with the translation of the title of this song? The song itself is quite clear for me.

I will see my advisor this afternoon, too. So, It makes me confuse to see him, or take my nap? Can you help me which one is important? And lab lab lab....

See! Dear Blue-Snow, it is exactly like what you have done in all your posts. The reply is awfuly irrelevant, isn't it?

Don't you think how annoying it is to read posts like this. I hope you figure it out.
