What is your favourite pop or rock band? #62 (permalink) Wed Oct 08, 2008 5:07 am   What is your favourite pop or rock band?

I can't remember if I've already posted in here -- I'll proceed as if I haven't.

I am a fan of songs moreso than bands, and as such is the case I have a hard time picking a favorite band. Heck, I'm finding it difficult to name ten, since so many have recorded what I consider to be memorable songs.

But... my favorite pop act of my lifetime is:

Madonna

She's not a great singer, but she is an exceptional entertainer whose career boasts a carload if hits and/or otherwise memorable songs, and as the years have passed her overall catalog has become pretty diverse. Some of her chief competitors were Billy Joel, Elton John, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. (I know, how obvious and commercial could I get?)

And of the rock bands that have been recording in my lifetime, my favorite is:

Bon Jovi

They played fast songs, they played slow songs, ballads and hard rock alike -- I like the depth of their total body of work and the fact that so many of their songs are memorable. Their main competitors were Metallica, Bruce Springsteen, U2, Van Halen (with DLR) and REO Speedwagon.

So I chose two highly mainstream, highly commercial acts. When you can put 20+ hits on a greatest hits CD and I grew up listening to all of them, that counts for something in my book.
Both had lots of competition spanning the sub-genres of pop and rock. I figure if I could spend five or six hours watching one pop act and one rock band perform, I'd go with those two.

Hi Tom,

I listen to songs but I am not that good at identifying what type they are (their genre).

Can you please help me identify the genre of the following songs?

1) Sexy back -- Justin Timberlake
2) What goes around... comes around -- Justin Timberlake (There's a bit played at the beginning of the song, it's really cool)
3) Cry me a river -- Justin Timberlake
4) Under my umbrella -- Rihanna

Also, can you please tell me names of a few songs that fall under grooves genre?
