Should all school teachers be required to attend courses every 5 years to update their knowledge?
Perhaps no issue in this world is as significant to people as knowledge. Despite various response people may have on the topic concerning the issue regarding whether teachers should take courses every five years to update their knowledge. I, given the chance, prefer to indorse that taking course to improve themselves should be the primary consideration.
The first reason for my propensity for taking courses to update teachers’ knowledge might involve the era we are in, which determines the fast updating rate of knowledge to a huge extent. It is undeniable that, at the information era, people intend to study continuously, in order to keep up the trend of the society. Updating knowledge is essential for teachers, especially the professors in the university. More specifically, not only do the professors teach students professional knowledge, but they also do researches. They must follow the newest discoveries in the academic field. In addition, a recent survey conducted by CAS (China Academy of Science) also matches my view of point perfectly. According to the report, as 72.1 percent of the teachers in Beijing, 68.3 percent of the teachers in Hong Kong, and an overwhelming percent of the teachers in Shanghai expressed their preference for updating knowledge, since in this way, they could keep them competitive; it is more than requirement and responsibility in sometimes. Thus, from this angle of vision, updating knowledge is necessary and inevitable.
More importantly, there might be some internal factors. It might be tempting to taking course to update teachers’ knowledge, considering a wide range of knowledge is the symbol of a good teacher. Teacher, whose mission is to transfer knowledge to the next generation, is a very special occupation in the current period. And hardly can we imagine the situation that how the students can be taught well, if the knowledge the teacher acquire is out of use. Besides, it is the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled, the people who sent a message to the questionnaire conducted by the Social Research Team of Stanford university; all of these concluded the result that the responsibility a good teacher burdens demand the endless learning. Consequently, on no account can we ignore the significance of updating knowledge.
Last but not the least, taking courses regularly helps teachers to improve themselves. As the old saying goes that, “it is never too late to learn”. The teachers should take courses purposely to improve their teaching methods, and learn from other excellent teachers.
In a nutshell, taking course to update knowledge is positive to the development of a teacher, and sometimes it is necessary for some external reasons. After ruminating over all these factors, if there is anyone out there who still wonders the value of updating knowledge, this essay is my answer.
