In your recording it really does sound like a "t". The fact that it is after a voiceless consonant, makes it stronger, I guess. I am not sure about british pronunciation but in american pronunciation the "t" in the word "what" is certainly weaker and very often even held, that is without plosion. What indicates whether the consonant at the end is voiced or not is the length of the preceding vowel. That is why foreign people (including me, obviously) often devoice consonants at the end. In a native speaker's talk such consonants often sound the same to a foreign ear.
I hope it makes any sense :P
Edit: Alan, that's a perfect example. Thank you for that. |

Exactly what I was going to say. This horse can hear the 't' in your version.

Hello Bez,
What a pity that you don't send to us more voice messages. I like very much your voice. The old captain was terrific!

S, ES, SH, CH,GE endings are also important things for ESL learners to learn. I always give priority to pronunciation of d,ed and s,es,etc. endings when I teach my students. Good pronunciation shows your root.

It's not easy for me to tell a voiced letter from an unvoiced one. Are you saying that the N in OPEN is voiced? How would OPEN be pronounced if it ended in an unvoiced sound? (If it's possible to give me this example.) |

Hello,
These links perhaps help you. If the last sound is voiceless(f,k, p,t,s,th)
th can be voiced and voiceless. Voiced: this, that, voiceless: thank, both etc.

Hi,
Here's a link to the site where all voiced and voiceless consonants are listed, along with some explaining:
http://esl.about.com/od/speakingenglish/a/voiced.htm
The rule of thumb is: if you feel a vibration in your throat when you pronounce a consonant, then it's a voiced consonant. If there's no vibration, then it's a voiceless one.
Actually, in English consonants come in pairs: voiced - voiceless. Examples:
g-k b-p f-v ...
If you want a side-by-side comparison of the consonants in each pair (made by a native speaker), with a comprehensive explanation on how to produce them, then look here under the heading "CONSONANTS":
http://www.rachelsenglish.com/sounds
Here's a video of the "g-k" pair:
