[Claim] Knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today. [Reason] The world today is significantly more complex than it was even in the relatively recent past. [Specific Task Instruction: Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based.]
The writer believes that there is no need to refer to historical experience when making important decisions today because the world today is changing at so fast a speed and so different from the past. I do not agree with the writer. I believe that history gives illuminations for solving nowadays problems and is worth people's attention. First, though the outward appearance of the world has changed greatly the essential parts of human's lives have not changed much. Women are still drawing their eye browns even though the pens their uses are now very different from their ancestors. Despite the fact that the tools people using look quite different from what they used to be, people have changed little about themselves. There are still wars, large income gaps between the poor and the rich, and discriminations despite people have been asking peace and equilibrium for centuries. And people still have to work hard, and know the art of dealing with people if the want to succeed in certain fields. The world is very similar with the past even though people think it to have changed a lot Second, people still gain inspirations from the past today. Successful past experiences are still being applied today and benefit people. For example, modern Chinese human resource managers use the ancient bureaucratic systems to manage the company. In ancient China, one's feat is awarded by higher ranks, which directly link to his yearly income, and high posts are left for ones who have greater abilities. Alike, modern HR managers award employees who get better sale numbers higher salaries and leave management posts for those who have the ability to lead people. Though past experience is very helpful, people should not rely only on the experience to solve problem. Any past experience has its historical limitations, and should not be applying to modern problems before thorough study and comparisons. For example, Japanese no longer eat seafood as their ancestor did, because the situation is different and 200 years ago there is no radiation pollutant along the Japanese coast. To sum up, the world today is similar to the past in many aspects and history give people much useful reference for people solving problems today. However, people should be careful with applying past experience to today's problems. After all, since the society is always changing, people should still evaluate the merits and demerits of copying the past thoroughly before they make decisions. |
