You may have bought more than you bargained for... #1 (permalink) Sat Oct 15, 2011 14:03 pm   You may have bought more than you bargained for...

Hi everyone,

I'll make my question clearer by a dialogue between Stephanie Beacham and Joan Collins in 'Dynasty'.

-Alexis has financial trouble and therefore she sells her hotel to a company called Pavilion Resorts. The only thing she doesn't know is that her vindictive cousin Sable is the owner of Pavilion Resorts. Sable confronts Alexis with the fact that she is the owner of Pavilion Resorts:

- Alexis: 'Sable, you bought my hotel? I sold it to Pavilion Resorts.'
- Sable: 'I own Pavilion Resorts, dear, so now I own the Carlton hotel.'
- Alexis: 'Well, cousin, you may have bought more than you bargained for.'

Does the underlined sentence mean that Sable may expect more trouble and problems caused by Alexis?

Thanks
Alexandro

The idiom is "more than one bargained for"

Yes, Alexis thinks Sable will face problems with that hotel.

Not necessarily caused by Alexis.

Thanks Beeesneees and OTS, but I heard Collins clearly say: 'You may have bought more than you bargained for.' This should be then: 'Well, cousin, you may have bought more than one bargained for?'Right? Or could it also be: - 'You may get more than you bargained for'? At least that's what I found back in the OALD.

'You may have bought more than you bargained for' is fine... but it still doesn't mean that further problems will necessarily be caused by Alexis.
