Oinktoberfest? Laughing That's a good one! Barktoberfest sounds comical, too. Are you the one who once said that your festivals are not so funny?

German words in the American language #32 (permalink) Sun May 07, 2006 21:26 pm   German words in the American language

Wow, this thread is turning into one of the best discussions we've recently had. It also reminds me that Jamie had written a short article on German words in American English called Americans and the "Oberfest".

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread with another loanword from German: sprachgef?hl (which can be spelt with or without umlaut). This is a kind of sixth sense many of us long for and a few others are lucky enough to be born with; something all good writers should have -- it's 'a feeling for language; an ear for the idiomatically correct or appropriate'.

Exclamation Note the example sentence given by WordNet®:

an intuitive feeling for the natural idiom of a language; "Dubyuh has no sprachgefuhl".

PS: Oops, I've just noticed that the thread started with a different subject and took this turn along the way, more exactly on the second page.

PPS: Meanwhile I've found another related thread:

On the other hand, it might be argued that Bush has created plenty of sprachgefuhl. After all, "Bushism" has its very own entry in Wikipedia, doesn't it? One should not misunderestimate (!) Dubya's command of language (or whatever it is that he regularly spews forth). Perhaps Bushisms will one day spawn a whole new language known as "Bushese". Cool
