Hello Alan,
I think sometimes that I get on your nerves , or I drive you up the wall, not only you but the other teachers on english-test.net. We say in Hungarian, that the style is the picture of the person. I noticed when I don't ask somebody but I wrote what I looked up I don't receive any answer. So I think you can tell "if you are so clever you don't need answer." but, I am never certain that it is right or not. I should have to learn to ask and not to say what I looked up. Otherwise, I drive up the wall when I have to do my shopping in a big shopping center. I become agorophobic.

I can't stand it when I make an appointment with friends and they are habitually late for no real reason other than "Oh, I just woke up" or "I was busy talking on the phone" but nothing important. I have some friends who have done this frequently and I used to get very stressed out about it. I think that if you make an appointment to do something with someone, you should be on time unless there is a very good excuse.
A second thing that really drives me up the wall is when I see people who are native speakers of English and they use chat speak and poor grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I understand even native speakers of English don't know everything or perhaps didn't learn it properly in school but I think people should take some pride in communicating properly with others. I like to write to pen pals and I've received a few letters from native English speakers where every letter was written in lowercase and no punctuation to speak of. I can't even stand the thought of writing them back sadly. _________________ Come talk with us in the Listening, speaking, pronunciation and accent training section of the forum! |

There are lots of little things that really get my goat. Oops, I suppose that means I'm an easily annoyed person. :-)
To mention just a couple of things that come to mind right now:

-- Yeah, that!
-- People who constantly lick their lips before speaking and/or have verbal tics (Or, what do you call them -- 'verbal habits'?). I'm talking about those people who interject into conversation over and over and over useless phrases such as: ''You know...'', ''Oh my gosh...'', ''You know what I mean''. They really drive me up the wall.
-- Fake, overly nice people in general frustrate me to no end. _________________ Just remember... if the world didn't suck, we'd all fall off! |

Showy people, loud speaking people, cruelty to animals, tilted pictures, reckless drivers, teachers asking too many questions, crowded buses, stuffy weather, mosquitoes, rats, stingy peoples, dirty torn notes, dust , fowl smell , rowdy crowd, pimps, corrupt government and its members , exploiters of mankind, inconsiderate people and many more. LOL

Hello,
It's just occured to me that when I used to teach it drove me crazy when I wrote on the blackboard and the chalk creaked on it; and the other was when my nails touched the blackboard and they made this sound. I always threw away the chalk, and my pupil were always very amused at this surprising scene. _________________ We always deceive ourselves twice about the people we love - first to their advantage, then to their disadvantage. |

Dear Kati,
I think you'd better not enter a classroom with me, I was always the kid who was clawing at the chalkboard with my nails. The sound and sensation never did bother me and I always found it strange that it bothered others so much. I guess that is part of what makes us all unique human beings!

Dear Megan,
I never thought that you used to be a naughty kid.
I believe that if I heard clawing noise of a piece of chalk or my nails on the blackboard now I would feel again the same thing. If I lived till the age 100 year old I wouldn't get used to it.
We' ve just returned from our country house and we met one of my neighbours who always very, very kind of us and I know behind my back they insult us. The other neighbour - who isn't already alive unfortunately - she used to tell me: "Kati, you have keep them at arm' length; avoid having a close relationship with them".
I took her advice and when they say something to me or give us - for example - some cake I feel the same shiver when my piece of chalk was clawing at the blackboard.
So I can say another thing which gets on my nerves: the hypocritical, honeyed people.
Slowly it occurs to me everything what drives me at the wall.
Take care Megan:

Dear Kati,
Yes, I have to admit, I had my naughty moments as a child. But I don't really consider that naughty. Some kids could take it and some kids couldn't. I didn't drive my classmates mad with it all day long. I didn't actually want to torment them with it. I just found it funny and interesting how some were so bothered by it and others didn't give it a second thought.
I have to agree with you too and add that two faced people get on my nerves as well. I know sometimes someone doesn't know how to confront another person but instead they talk with others about it but I don't like the one's who are nasty about it.

What gets my goat is when people (mostly strangers) crowd around me, like when you're on a bus and the bus is jam-packed with people who are literally breathing down you neck. I find that disconcerting and unnerving and ... just plain annoying! Kinda makes me wish I'd never boarded that bus.

That gets under my skin too, I can't bear such inconsiderate people who see fit to talk in a loud voice in public places, where there are other people that are not party to their conversation, and that are forced to listen to them. I think people should either speak in a quiet voice or go to a place where their loud conversation won't disturb anyone. _________________ If it's not easy, don't do it!

Hello Megan,
I thought a naughty kid is a kind expression,- excuse me my French.- I wanted to say something pleasant.
I have to say to you that I used to be a very, very naughty kid, and my sister also. My poor Mum ( who was a teacher also) always told us that she didn't dare to go to the street because when she met one of our teachers they always complained about us.
Our behaviour caused lot of annoyance to our teachers. I am very sorry, but this is the truth.
