"As I walked home from school I saw a place from my childhood." Is this a correct sentence, or do I need to a insert a comma after "school" ?

You need the comma only if the reader might be confused by the sentence structure. I would use one here. The statement itself is odd, however, as I would expect the entire route home from school to consist of childhood sights.
