Films HAVE become a popular kind of entertainment fOR most people nowadays. Besides enhancing our relaxation, films are really advantageous in providE us new information and knowledge, especially ABOUT of the country where theY ARE MADE. Personally, watching films is my favorite activity in my free time and one film which is really impressive is “The slumdog millionaire”. It was made in India and won 8 Oscars and other nominations. ' The first thing I learned about India from this film was the lives of people in the slums. I was strongly impressed by copious heaps of debris with multiple temporary camps locatED nearby. People WERE SUFFERNG FROM malnutrition and had low living standards. While some people earned their livings by classifying trash into recycle and non-recycle type, others dyed cloths to sell. Furthermore, children did not have an opportunity to go to school like those living in urban. I was really sympathetic to their situations.
The second thing I learned about India was that the religious conflicts were very serious, in which people faced a lot of dangers. Some uprisings were unpredictable and abrupt, which led to many death tolls. Consequently, some people lost their “homes” and children became orphans. In this film, two main characters had their innocent mother killed while she was trying to escape the conflict.
The third thing I learned was the tremendous development of India in approximately PAST ten years. After the main characters had left their slumS for a new place, they were astonished by the changes when they returned. There was no longer their “home”. Instead, there were multiple sky scrappers and modern offices replacing. However, the development of India cuts both ways. That is to say, besides the economical improvement, the discrepancy between the poor and the rich is more and more visible. In addition, more and more social maladies appeared. Many people gambled, some even joined in the Mafia to earn money. Thus, although the living standard of India has been improved, there are still a lot of concerns and problems WHICH need to be solved in the society.
All in all, “The slumdog millionaire” is one of the most valuable and meaningful movie I have ever watched. The film described elaborately and exactly the reality of India during its developing period. The most outstanding features of India during this time are the slums, the religious conflicts and the developments with a lot of concerns coming along. Sometimes, I watch this movie again and still feel engrossed and interested.
