Dear teacher,
Can I replace "and" with "but" in this sentence:
1." I was wet and had no other clothes to change."
2. " I was wet but had no other clothes to change."
Thanks.

Hi mlngvt

Yes, you can use 'and' or 'but'. The word 'and' simply adds information. The word 'but' adds contrasting information.

I would also add the word 'into' to then end of your sentence:
"I was wet and/but had no other clothes to change into."

You could also say (just as an example):
"I was wet but didn't have a change of clothes."

Amy

You can use both "but" and "and", but you cannot replace one for the other. As what Miss Amy had said, we use "and" simply to add information while we use "but" to add contrasting information.
