Hi,

Which sentences sound natural to a native speaker?

1 The service was so bad I had an occassion to complain to the manager.
2 The service was so bad I had occassion to complain to the manager.

Thanks.

Morning OTS,

First I have to point out the spelling - occasion.

This would be the one I would choose:
Quote:
The service was so bad I had occasion to complain to the manager.
Having said that, I'm not really sure that the expression works in that particular sentence because the expression tends to suggest a random rather than a specific action. A sentence like this: Over the years I've had occasion to complain about food in retsaurants but usually I find standards pretty high, perhaps better gives the sense of the expression.
