Hi,

As you have shown in your answer, the right word to choose here is attempt meaning try used both as verb and now. Assault is another word for attack in the military sense as in make an assault on and also in a physical/personal sense on another person.

Accordingly:
make attempt(to do sth; at doing sth)
They made no attempt to escape.
An attempt was made at escaping.

An attempt was made on Pope's life.
