Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the work place. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer. What in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?
In universities students receive a wide range of knowledge from the basics of their field to very special information in narrow areas. Not all received information is then used in their professional activities. However, for some reasons explained below, I believe that universities should provide knowledge in different areas connected with the main specialization.
The main reason why students go to universities is to get acquainted with the area they are going to work in, to achieve special skills for this area. That is why the courses that are the closest to the students’ chief subject are the most important, and, therefore, the largest amount of time is usually spent on them. If a student is not able to get basic skills of his future profession, he will hardly get employed in spite of his university diploma.
Nevertheless, all additional courses also play very important role because they provide information about the areas closely related to the students’ specialization, broaden their horizons and open their minds, help them to structure the whole picture of the subject. For example, such course as the history of music does not help to play an instrument or sing better. However, it is very useful because it shows the picture of world music progress through time, different countries traditions and gives keys fo the future music development. Knowledge in connected areas is very helpful because there is no such profession that is totally isolated from others.
To sum up, I believe that basic skills education is of the same importance as studying different connected subjects that are not directly used in professional activities.
