New Year's Resolutions #1 (permalink) Mon Oct 31, 2011 3:17 am   New Year's Resolutions

Dear all,

As the days get shorter, the shops full of Christmas-related goods on offer, it feels the year is reaching its end.

I know it is early to talk about New Year's Resolutions, however, I am curious about your perspective and attitude towards this phenomena.

So my questions are:

1) Do you make new Year's Resolutions? (If no, why not?)

2) Do you stick to them?

3) Do you postpone important actions to take or a change in habits until January 1st?

4) Any other comment with regard to the subject that comes to your mind.

I look forward to reading your contributions.

Kind regards,

Ozzy

New Year's Resolutions #2 (permalink) Mon Oct 31, 2011 18:05 pm   New Year's Resolutions

Dear Ozzy,

You are right, the days get shorter, at 5 o’clock(p.m) it is dark. In Hungary in this period the shops used to be full of Christmas related goods on offer. I remember that 7th November we always got a premium and then I could buy every Christmas present from this premium. After I didn’t have to deal with presents only the food what I wanted to prepare for Christmas.

Now the situation changed. There is a crise in our country also. Lot of people are unimoloyed. They have only money to buy a very modest food themselves. More and more people loose everything and become homeless.I don’t know where it results. There are demonstrations. Almost everybody is discontent with the government. You can't know about this, because Hungary is a so small that it gets lost among the big countries in Europe than: Grrece, Italy, Spain, Portugaly Ireland. These countries are in crise for the moment.

I wrote this because you can’t see the preparation for Christmas.
My resolutions for the New Year:

I. I don’t want to be hurted by unimportant things because if I make this I cause to everybody misunderstanding, for not only the others but to myself also. I became very hypersensitive int he recent years.

2.Of course I will stick to them. I will say to myself every morning „ Be careful! Not to be hypersensitive. Sometimes I can speak to myself. I think I begin sooner. But I WANTED TO START THE NEW YEAR WITH A CLEAR SHEET!!!

3.Than I wrote in my 2. points I don’t wait till first January. I begin to train myself right now.

4. It would very important that my husband will be helthier than he was in 2011.

Dear Ozzy,

Do you share with me your New Year’s Resolutions?

Regards:
Kati Svaby

Dear Kati,

Thank you very much for your very complete answer.

Although normally I do believe in making plans and go for them, I have some resolutions in mind.

It is very important to avoid people with negative carma; they only suck the energy out of you and leave you exhausted.

1) I am going to make some New Year's Resolutions for coming year because I have gone through many changes this year. The resolutions are necessary to optimise the opportunities that are presenting themselves around this moment.

2) I absolutely stick to them; I make resolutions that are reachable and more precise.

It makes no sense at all to say:

"I am going to work hard" (how, what is the aim of it?)

"I am going to make more money" (how much more?)

"I am going to be a better person" (in what way?)

"I am going to start a business" (why / what kind of business / with whom / where?)

3) There are some plans that will benefit from the timing, as my business profits from New Year Resolutions. So, postponing, in a way, yes.

4) Focus on your own plans and gather people surrounding you that add something constructive to your life.

Do not spend your energy in negativism.

I have learnt that avoiding negative energy from people that are not your friends or good family members has made me much stronger and more able to help some of my friends emotionally as they are going through tough times.

Kati: being hypersensitive means you care too much for too many people, be more selfish and dedicate your attention to people who you think they deserve iot as they treat you with respect.

Note:
helthier = Healthier
the days get shorter=the days are getting shorter (it is a process)
crise = crisis
More and more people loose everything and become homeless= More and more people are losing everything and are becoming homeless.(also an ongoing process)

I hope to be able to be online here a bit more often, but tomorrow I am starting with my 2nd course.

*** I look forward to reading the contributions of many others.

Warm regards from a warm and sunny Mexico,

Ozzy

Hello Ozzy ,

Thank you very much for providing this interesting thread. I believe proper plan and management of my time will make myself better. This topic make me call the insight myself and ask her what is the most important thing for you to be happy ,Jess ? After though for a few days the conclusion is family and good friends is the most things for me to be happy, here is my New year’s Resolutions:

First, I want to ask a long leave(10 days) to visit my family on Chinese New year Second , Keep on learning English then I can communicate with my foreign close
friends freely and make my work more easier.

Third , don’t to be a workaholic , spend more time staying with family and phoning parents and friends.

Finally , try to present myself in a more clear and civilized manner and in order to get my point across ,then get a good performance in work.

I will stick to them absolutely and I with make a check list .

Best regards,

Jess

I'm not in favor of any such kinds of resolution, I consider making them a bit of a fool's errand (at least in my case) because following through on them is a big problem and you find yourself under a lot of pressure to boot, when you fail to keep them, which is uncalled for.
I'd rather make resolutions spontaneously, when I see fit, without having any dates hanging over my head, like New-Years Eve and such.

Dear Ozzy
I read what you wrote about making resolutions for the new year and I wanna tell you two things:
First,I really thought that the new year is just shopping and party, now I know I was wrong.
Second, even though I'm muslim I do olso have some plans for the new year such as improving my English, learning a new language, improving my skills at drawing, making changes of my house such as the panting and the couches and also planting more trees at our garden.
That would be most of it ,let me know what you think of my plans.
I wish you all to be happy and healthy ,

New Year's resolutions?! Me?! Just what are you implying? That I need to change? Just so you know, I am perfect the way I am, buddy! ;D

No, I never make New Year's resolutions. I've always found it silly that people might choose a specific time of the year to alter themselves in some way. Why wait for a particular day?! It's like an excuse to put off doing something. It's like you are trying to buy yourself some more time so you can continue the way you are.

Not necessarily, Christina.ro. For most, I think, people it's easier to start something at the begining of the year, because it's like a START sign in a race.
It's easier to run if you know where the FINISH is. And it's easier to start where the START sign is than somewhere in the middle of the road.

However, I'm not a person who make New Year's (or any other in fact) resolutions. I've just already learnt that I won't stick them anyway. If I run, I always stop a few steps before the finish point I determined for myself.

That's why I try to achieve something without making any resolutions, any big fuss around it. It's better if I focus on the road, not on the goal.

Cheers!

Hello,

If we begin to philosophize about the New Year’s resolutions then I have to say you are right. Everything happens with us on the road. Our life is the road. Tort is right when he says if he made a New Year’s resolution he would find himself under a pressure to boot.

Cristina says „ I've always found it silly that people might choose a specific time of the year to alter themselves in some way.”

Cristina, we make resolutions in every moment of our life (on our road) you can make it in the next minute, tomorrow, after-tomorrow…etc. and on New Year’s Day. This is a specific time if you want or not.

Our goal can be near or far away, it will happen in the future or it will never happen.

So the goal is an illusion, the infinite. That’s why I agree with Violino: : It's better if I focus on the road, not on the goal.

If I had taken myself seriously I should have said that I never could keep my New Year’s resolution. That’s why I told Ozzy that I already began to change something bad in my life.

Ozzy, as a language teacher recommended to us a theme, or a game.

I wouldn't be a clever egg but I think so.

Bye:

Thank you all for your honest insights regarding your opion.

It is great to read reactions of peers that kind of hate the idea and others who embrace it.

Dekrayat, make a list when you will do each task, this will be useful with the plans you have.

Jessi, it is wise to balance work and leisure; this year that balance has not been perfect, however, financially I feel more relaxed.

Warm regards everyone from a sunny Mexico

Ozzy

Hello Jess,

I read your resolutions for the New Year. I liked your letter. It is very sincere. I believe that you want to make a better time –rating for that you will be more successful in your carrier.

Ozzy’s letter really gave to us a flash of insight into ourselves. After all, you say the most important for you your family and your friends. You would like to ask for leave of absence to see your parents on Chinese New Year.
You also - than me - want to keep learning English because we would like to speak fluently.
Besides, your wish is to reach a good performance at work.

I wish the best. Your resolutions can be achievable.

Yours ever.
Bye: Kati

Dear Kati and friends,

I hope the health of your husband stabalises or better: improves.

I believe that many illnesses we struggle with, boil down to our mental state.

I see that in Europe people are out of their mind with the crisis, in Mexico we have lived times of crisis for many years.

People accept the fact of crisis and go on with their lives, that said, some should go a step further and make use of the vast amount of opportunities to improve their current position.

Warm regards,

Ozzy

Dear Jessy,

I can recommend you, that you have to listen to at least 2 "eslJennifer" -lessons, every day-this takes only max.10-15 minutes. She speaks a very good pronunciation, and what she explains is very good. Now there is here only two links-but you can find more than 200 and each is better than the other.

You have to write in the Google only:
Quote:
ESLJennifer
and you find lot of lessons in every kinds of issues.

When I found this I think my pronunciation amiliorated.

Ozzy? you as English teacher you agree with me?

Regards to both of you.

Kati
