How to learn English #17 (permalink) Tue May 23, 2006 15:58 pm   How to learn English

Hi Michael, Spencer and Christina,

It's very good you have decided to support each other and share your thoughts. As you know you can always ask questions regarding the English grammar or any language related topic. You can also use the materials on our site and take part in the ongoing discussions. This means you will use a variety of methods developing different language skills.

Talk to you soon,
Torsten

Hi Cris! Hi Torsten!

Spencer, have you gone lost? Confused I think our agreement is to build anything like a class room in which we have a look to another and sometimes to give another advice to help us finding the right track! The most important thing by doing that is that noone will feel annoyd if the other shows him some mistakes. As I experienced I?m often enough on the wrong track! So I think we?ll go on using the sources of this site. And if anyone of us has a question to the others he/she won?t hesitate to ask it. And like you mentioned, Cris, you are pretty welcome. For the moment I must stop my post because my horse needs a bit care. By the way, Torsten, I enjoyed to hear from you again. Cool

Talk to you soon too!

Hi Everyone,
Michael, I'm always around, just watching, like the BIG BROTHER in Oscar Wilds' (not Konnec) novel. Smile
All jokes aside, I don't have that much time lately than I had before, but I'll be back soon, I hope.
Cris, welcome to the brotherhood, eventhough you're a sister.
If I notice any mistake of yours I'll be mercyless, I promise.
By the way, Michael, I've just learnt there is no such a thing as "an advice" therefore there is no "another advice" either.
At least that's what I think.
See you later

Hi Spencer!

I not really sure whether my expression "another advice" is correct. But what I tried to express was "each other advice"!
I think there is a difference between an other and another! Let?s see if there is a teacher who solve this problem.

Michael, how do you quote?
If I want to quote, I always quote the whole message, but everyone else knows the way of quoting only lines.
Tell me please

Hi Spencer!

First you quote the whole reply! Then you can delete sentences or parts of the reply. You also can delete parts between what you want to quote or you mark parts of the post you want to quote with your mouse and click the botton Quote at the buttom of your reply window. Try it and you will succed soon. Also you can, during you try, preview the results as often as you want

I needed some tries too! Cool

Hi "Spe" Laughing
You should click the "quote" button, and then just highlight and delete the lines/words/letters you want to remove from the quote. You might have noticed, that I deleted half of your name from the quote above. Laughing

You're exactly right, you also cannot say "another advice". Michael also corrected his text the right way, since what he meant to say was "give each other advice".

Michael
Please give me an example (sentence) of when you think it would be possible to use "an other". Then we can talk about it further. Very Happy

HEY, it's still blue, IT'S NOT RIGHT!
I spent 10 minutes on delete Amys' lines to get this funny fake-quote, and it's still BLUE!
I could've written the whole thing myself.
Just for the record, the idea was good, I didn't add anything to Amys' quote.
Sorry Guys, my bad, I just wanted to be funny, that's all.

Hi Spencer!

I think your problem with the quote is only that you deleted the first quote order. If you have a look at the orders between the [ ] you will find out the mistake soon.

Please let me recommand you to have a look to my signature here if you quote this post.

Hi again Amy!

I think my first reply to your post is completely nonsens! Like Alan explained the difference is:

another means additional

other means different, alternative, not the same

I only wonder wether it is possible to add an indefinite article to other (not usable with advice of course Embarassed Thanks Spe Cool ) For instance:

At this time my car is old, I?ll substitue it for an other (one)! not additional but alternative

Is that possible?
