Essay:

The lecture discussed several problems with the core curriculum. Unlike the lecture, the reading passage states that an ambitious core curriculum is very important for the development of a student personality and the reputation of the colleges.

First the lecture states that the courses in the core curriculum are sometimes to easy or irrelevant. For example somebody who has chosen economics as his or her major is not very interested in an art course which is included in the core curriculum. Furthermore it is possible that the courses are to easy and the students get bored.

Second the lecture states the problem that the classes are to big for effective learning. For example if the classes are to big the students cannot concentrate and the lecture is not that interactive.

On the contrary, the reading supports the concept of a core curriculum. The consequence of an ambitious core curriculum is often a higher reputation of this particular college.

Furthermore it can improve the personality of a student in a positive way. For example courses in interpersonal interaction can improve soft skills like team working, problem solving and so on.

In conclusion, the lecture cast doubt on reading. The lecture does so by stating problems of the concept of core curriculum.
