Can one say:
1-In its own day, the play was not considered a good piece and as such did not receive much attention.

I understand the meaning of the sentence, but my problem with the sentence is that it is not clear what "as such" refers back to.

Yes, a little off. 'The play was considered a poor piece' would make better reference.
