Question:

Some items (such as clothes or furniture) can be made by hand or by machine. Which do you prefer – items made by hand or items made by machine? Use reasons and specific examples to explain your choice.

My essay:

We live in a time where the usage of technologies and machineries facilitate our lives a lot. While it is tempting to buy items that are made by machine for their availability and appealing prices, I prefer to buy items that are done by hand.

First of all, there is this following saying that I appreciate: “I am not very rich to buy cheap things”. In other words, expensive items last longer while cheap items can be broken easily. Buying a good quality item from the beginning could save the money that we spend to replace the broken one. Handcraft items are certainly expensive, but they present better quality. Their high prices are mainly due to the time, skills and human labor that are needed to make them. From an economical point of view, handcraft industries offer job opportunities. By buying handcraft, we are actually participating, even a little, in solving one of the major present-day problems of our world; unemployment.

Then, to me, realizing handcraft items bring out the best qualities of human being. Perseverance, perfection and passion are fulfilled at their utmost. Making something by hand requires patience until the object reaches the needed quality and gains the satisfaction of clients. Additionally, the passion is crucial in order to find the necessary will for repeating the same tasks several times.

Next, handcraft items are authentic. Machine produces millions of copies of the same item that are distributed everywhere. It is likely to come across the same item in many places. However, the chances for finding the same hand-made item are fewer since they are produced in small quantities. Moreover, an item made by hand can be “personalized”. New features can be incorporated into the item to satisfy a particular client or to cope with special situation. For instance, my friend’s father, who is fond of reading, had to stay in bed because of his illness. Unfortunately, his arms are so weak to keep a book for a long time. My friend asked a furniture craftsman to make a special bed for her father with a movable and resizable support for books. The result that came out was useful and unique! My friend’s father is enjoying reading again while the craftsman is receiving demands for other similar beds.

To sum up, items that are made by hand present several qualities. Nowadays, using such items transports us to the past where men’s hand skills are important.
