Interestingly enough the word 'facts' in American English is pronounced like 'fax'.

Are you sure? Maybe they just sound so similar it's hard to tell the difference. I have that problem with word "house" in English and "huis" in Dutch. When they are talking normally, I almost can't hear a difference most of the time but there is.
