Hello Alan,

It is me, Arsalan, again. I am very glad that you answered my message.

Yesterday I learnt new words. They are: a chair, a hall, a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen, a window and a door.

Take care,

Arsalan

Hello Urs ,

I did not know how chess pieces are named in English. But I have looked through the Russian-English dictionary and found out that they are: a pawn, a knight, a bishop, a castle (rook), a queen and a king. Thank you for your very interesting question.

I think that I am able to play chess with native speakers now:)

Take care,
Erdem

Hello Mujibur, Urs,Mauricio, Sara, Alan and everyone,

How are you doing now?

This week we have had mini-football tournament. First, we end a game in a draw with 8’a’ Grade boys.

Then, we had a semi-final game with7’b’ grade boys. We won that game in a score 5:2, and got through to the final. The final was held yesterday, and we won the first prize. I scored six goals on the tournament and I am really happy. I am looking forward to the time when the snow will melt away. After that we will be able to play a ‘big’ soccer.

I wish you all the best,
Bator

Hello Erdem

Thanks for the names of the chess pieces - so we can talk about the game, can't we?
May I ask you the next question: You certainly know what the verb "to check" means. But, do you happen to know what the verb "to castle" means? Could you try to give a short explanation? Just if you feel like it, ok?

As for playing Chess with a native speaker: there must be a way to play chess virtually with someone else over the internet, I'm quite sure, but I couldn't give you an exact hint where to look. Maybe someone of your chess club might know, or someone here on the forum? It would be nice to play chess with, let's say, Mauricio from Brazil, wouldn't it?

Cheers Urs

Skating on a small lake #66 (permalink) Sun Feb 12, 2012 21:50 pm   Skating on a small lake

Hello everyone
Yesterday, my twin brother called and asked me if I would like to skate on a frozen lake.
"Yes, of course I would", I said. So we met at the main station at twelve today and set off together.
We had to change train once and then got to "Pfäffikon" at a quarter to one o'clock in the afternoon.
Gosh, I never had seen that many people getting off a train in such a small village!
And when we came to the border of the lake, there were dozens of small shops set up - you could buy saussages, hamburgers, hot tea and many other things to eat and drink, you name it.

It's not too often that a lake of this size freezes in winter in my region, you know.
But I guess that's nothing special to you. Is the lake Baikal frozen right know? Or is there a smaller lake in your village where you can skate and play ice-hockey?
And is there anybody in your class who doesn't like to skate?

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Cheers Urs

Hello Bator,

congratulations on your winning first prize in the football tournament. You must be a great football player. It's nice that you can play even when the snow is so thick. Do you play indoors?
But, of course you must have a great time when you can also play outdoors.
Football is very appreciated here in Brazil too. All kids like to play. And they usually dream of becoming professional players. But that's just for the most skilled ones.

Well, I hope you have good weather soon, so you can play more with your friends.

Take care,

Mauricio.

Hello Urs,

Thank you for your message.

"To check" means to threaten a king to beat him by any piece of other colour except by an opposite king.

"To castle" means to change places between a king and a castle. You can castle to a long side and to a short side. You cannot castle when your king is checked.

Unfortunately, I cannot play chess on-line, because I have not got Internet connection at home. But I hope I will get it soon.

Best wishes,
Erdem

Hello Urs,

Thank you for your picture of a frozen lake. Lake Baikal is frozen too. It freezes every year in the end of January.
I cannot skate yet. But I would like to learn to do it. The local skating rink works from the end of February till the beginning of April.

Take care,
Arsalan

A late hello

Hello everyone
It' s quite late in the night now - but despite the small hour, I would like to thank you for your messages!

Hi Erdem:
You got that excellently right - we call that move "rochade", like people from France would say. That would be marvelous to play chess on-line, wouldn't it?

Hi Arsalan:
Thanks for letting me know about the frozen lake Baikal. Skating is a wonderful thing. When I was a kid, they had just completed a new rink in the next village. So we spent almost every free wednesday afternoon there in winter when I was in fifth and sixth grade.

There was a juke box. You know what that is?
Some elder girls and boys fed it with coins so that they could choose their favorite singles to be played, you know?
And then everyone could hear these songs over the loudspeakers!

I wish you a good start with skating, and a good day to everyone else!

Take care

Urs

Hello Urs,

How are you?

Tomorrow I am going to take part in draughts competition in the town of Arshan. In America draughts are called checkers but the rules are different. In Russia we play Russian draughts. They are very popular here. We even have All-Russia championship in draughts.

Hear you soon,
Erdem

Draughts

Hi Erdem

I didn't know that game and so I had to look it up in Wikipedia:

This is the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draughts.

There was even a little film that showed a short game between two players in an abstract way.

Russian draughts is different, you said. So may I ask you:

- Do you play on a 8 x 8 checkerboard?
- Can you capture backwards too?
- How long does a game take normally?

Have a nice day!

Cheers Urs

Who of you does play an instrument

Hello everyone

I wonder if anybody plays an instrument, like a flute, a violin, a piano or something else?
Is there a genuinly Buryat instrument?

Hello Timur

For how long do you attend the boxing club when you go there?
What do you start with there - warming up, some exercises?
How many are there on an evening?

Cheers Urs
