How to improve writing skills? #1 (permalink) Fri Nov 25, 2011 20:41 pm   How to improve writing skills?

Hello. I don't really know where to place this topic so I hope it's fine if I just post it here.

I would like to ask you to give me some advice on writing essays. If compared to most of my schoolmates my English grammar is actually pretty good and so is my vocabulary. I mostly understand everything I hear or read. The problem is that I can't write essays at all. I write short answers and my language doesn't seem diverse at all although I know quite a lot of phrases, linking words etc. I just can't be creative and all I do is to write a short answer which may contain basic information but that's all. Especially at school I can't remember any of useful phrases or anything I could use not to mention my lack of ideas. I just freeze. The same thing happens when I talk... just short and boring answers and nothing more than that. The simplier, the better.

Today we had an English lesson and we analysed some poems. There were also those questions that are kind of... what shall I call it.. essay type if you like -> Double trouble. The lack of understanding the deeper meaning of the poem and my terrible writing skills are probably the worst possible combination. I was so surprised by the answers of my schoolmates and felt ashamed that all I did was write two short answers which contained analysis of what can actually be seen in the poem and nothing more...deeper meaning or something like that. I just didn't see anything else nor was I able to make statements and support them with certain lines or something like that. If I am asked to explain whether I like the poem or not I just write a plain answer such as "Yes, because it is... and that's it. >_> My schoolmates wrote a few diverse sentences using great structures and all and I really admire that. Also, their ideas were pretty awesome too. It's a pity I can't handle that in my first language either...actually it's probably even worse because I fail at the grammar too.

What can I do to improve my writing skills? What about being nervous when talking? (either English or my first language, pity, I know and that's probably why I keep my sentences simple and boring) What can I do about understanding and analysing poems? And please, don't advise me to write essays and have them corrected by my English teacher because he's not really fond of correcting nor reading them(what a teacher, huh, but he has trouble correcting our homeworks too, in fact, he hasn't returned us any this year and I'm not kidding) and he would probably think I'm kissing his a** (I hope this isn't too rude).

Thanks for reading this and maybe even taking some time to answer my questions. :)
