Are these sentences natural? November 30 #1 (permalink) Wed Nov 30, 2011 12:33 pm   Are these sentences natural? November 30

Hi,

Are the following sentences natural to a native ear?

1. I would show you what an out of order is, but I am too freaking old, I am too freaking blind. (originally a dialogue from a movie)

2. Is it not too warm here? ( I said this as I walked in a room)

3. I would have to be a monkey to have that kind of hair growth.

Thanks,
MG.

1. On the face of it, this seems like a mistake. Where did the transcription come from? As I'm sure you know, it's not uncommon for Internet transcriptions of movie dialogue, song lyrics, etc. to contain errors. The version at http://www.whysanity.net/monos/scent.html is rather different (I'm assuming it's the same scene...) It's almost like your version is someone's paraphrase.

2. This is grammatically correct English but not something I would naturally say in conversation. I would probably say something like "Isn't it a bit / rather warm in here?"* This is a mild complaint. You are saying that you think it's too warm for comfort, and seeing whether other people agree.

3. OK.

* [edited] Not to be confused with "Isn't it warm in here!" which is an exclamation rather than a question.
