Can "will" be replaced by simple present tense? #1 (permalink) Wed Nov 30, 2011 23:37 pm   Can "will" be replaced by simple present tense?

Hello everyone,

Responding to juvenile offending is a unique policy and practice challenge. While a substantial proportion of crime is perpetuated by juveniles, most juveniles will ‘grow out’ of offending and adopt law-abiding lifestyles as they mature.

If "will" is replaced by the simple present tense (most juveniles grow out...), does the sentence retain the same meaning. Or does "will" have any modal sense in addition to simple futurity?

Thank you.

In this case there is little difference between "grow out" and "will grow out". You could argue that "will" is slightly more forceful and definite.

Using simple present makes it sound more like a general truth, i.e. it always happens. Juveniles grow out of offending... the sun rises in the east etc.

But Dozy's right that here it makes little difference
